    Rethinking Prayer and Health Research: An Exploratory Inquiry on Prayer’s Psychological Dimension

    A brief literature review of cancer survival trials is employed by the author to raise questions on their design and to bring speculatively into discussion concepts such as “worldview”, “intentional normative dissociation”, and “psychosomatic plasticity-proneness”. Using prayer’s psychological dimension as a way to unite such elements opens new fertile perspectives on the academic study of prayer and health. In this context, it is suggested that a consistent interdisciplinary research agenda is required in order to understand those biopsychosocial factors interconnected within the process and outcome of prayer before attempting to decipher the big answers laying dormant probably within the transpersonal and spiritual layers of human experience

    Wild, domestic and feral? Investigating the status of suids in the Romanian Gumelnita (5th mil. cal BC) with biogeochemistry and geometric morphometrics

    International audienceIn south-eastern Romania, a prominent place was given to pigs in the Gumelniţa culture (Late Chalcolithic, second half of 5th millennium BC); as was the highly prized wild boar, one of a variety of species targeted for hunting. The wild boars’ ecological niche and the scale of pig husbandry were investigated during a stable isotope study of the Gumelniţa A2 occupations at Borduşani-Popină, Hârşova-tell and Vităneşti-Măgurice. Results from the bone collagen δ15N and δ13C analysis suggested that the wild boars did not inhabit dense forests, in any of these locations. The emerging picture is of small-scale pig husbandry involving household management: pigs being fed leftovers and/or by-products of human activities. At Vităneşti, previous work involving geometric morphometrics on suid molars evidenced, besides the two expected groups of small domestic pigs and large specimens with wild molar shape (i.e. wild boar), the presence of specimens with large size and domestic shape molars, whose relationship with the human community was unclear. Results from the combined geometric morphometric and stable isotope analyses, suggested that the large specimens with domestic molar shape lived in close proximity to the wild ecosystem. They were probably not part of the domestic stock, but belonged to a feral population and were acquired through hunting

    Romanian public administration reform 2.0: using innovative foresight methodologies to engage stakeholders and the public

    Purpose: The purpose of this practice-oriented paper is to look at a recent, late-phase development in public administration (PA) reform in Romania, specifically the drafting of the recently adopted national Strategy on Strengthening the Efficiency of Public Administration (2014-2020). In particular, the paper focuses on the opportunities and limits of outsourcing the building of the vision underlying the strategy and the prioritization of strategic objectives. The article’s story is also placed in the broader context of agencification literature and, more specifically, the involvement of executive agencies in policymaking. Design/methodology/approach: The paper describes the vision-building exercise, developed according to a script already tested in several sectoral strategy-making processes, and the objectives and procedure of the online participatory consultation by using an adapted real-time Delphi format (similarly tested in the recent past). Findings: The paper reports on the ways in which the output of the visioning process and of online consultations may be used to enhance a strategic process already underway. Originality/value: PA reform in post-communist countries has been among the most hotly debated, intensely pursued, yet seemingly elusive policy objectives of the transition and post-transition periods. Among pre-accession and then European Union (EU) member states, the need to get in and then to get involved in European policymaking provided some impetus for such reforms and also set substantial constraints, without however always adding much predictability or significantly streamlining the public sector. The paper contributes to this debate by proving an innovative method of devising a reform strategy by outsourcing the strategy-building process to an agency with the necessary know-how and experience.</p

    Early herding at Măgura-Boldul lui Moş Ivănuş (early sixth millennium BC, Romania): environments and seasonality from stable isotope analysis

    International audienceStable isotope analyses were conducted on faunal remains from the site of Măgura-Boldul lui MoşIvănuş with the objective of characterizing the environments and seasonality of husbandry in theearliest Neolithic (Gura Baciului-Cârcea/Starčevo-Criş I) of southern Romania. Results from bonecollagen analysis indicate extensive herding strategies for cattle and pigs. However, sequential analysisin tooth enamel also provides evidence for winter leaf foddering in one bovine, potentially kept by thesettlement over winter. In some instances, sheep were fed a 13C-enriched resource in late winter, whichmay have also coincided with lactation. It could not be determined whether this contribution was fromC3 or C4 plants. Although isolated, these findings may be important in evaluating how early agriculturalcommunities dealt with environmental constraints. These results are also interpreted withreference to the models of intensive mixed farming systems recently proposed by Bogaard (2004) andHalstead (2006)

    Concept Study of Radio Frequency (RF) Plasma Thruster for Space Propulsion

    Electric thrusters are capable of accelerating ions to speeds that are impossible to reach using chemical reaction. Recent advances in plasma-based concepts have led to the identification of electromagnetic (RF) generation and acceleration systems as able to provide not only continuous thrust, but also highly controllable and wide-range exhaust velocities. For Future Space Propulsion there is a pressing need for low pressure, high mass flow rate and controlled ion energies. This paper explores the potential of using RF heated plasmas for space propulsion in order to mitigate the electric propulsion problems caused by erosion and gain flexibility in plasma manipulation. The main key components of RF thruster architecture are: a feeding system able to provide the required neutral gas flow, plasma source chamber, antenna/electrodes wrapped around the discharge tube and optimized electromagnetic field coils for plasma confinement. A preliminary analysis of system performance (thrust, specific impulse, efficiency) is performed along with future plans of Space Propulsion based on this new concept of plasma mechanism

    Impaired recognition memory and emotional reactivity associated with loss of cortical integrity in rats after chronic exposure to aluminum

    Although the neurotoxic effects of aluminum (Al) have been extensively investigated, with a particular emphasis on the contribution of this metal to several neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, there are few studies on behavioral impairments associated with Al exposure. This lack of data is even more provocative since recent researches have shown that Al induces significant cerebrovascular alterations in cortical architectures. We have investigated possible behavioral impairments of spatial recognition memory and emotional reactivity on rats that were chronically exposed to Al. Concurently, we have studied cytoarchitectural integrity of isocortex, hippocampus and entorhinal cortex, and striatopallidal structures on brain sections stained with the Bielchowsky silver stain method. Our results indicated spatial recognition memory deficits that were significantly represented on spontaneous alternation task performances, but less obvious on Morris water maze task performances of experimental animals, suggesting differences in the sensitivity of these two spatial memory paradigms. We also observed emotional reactivity patterns of modifications on male and female rats exposed to Al. This sexsegregated difference was not completely surprising since estrogens could have neuroprotective effects on adult female rats exposed to Al, although this specific hormonal modulation remains to be tested. These behavioral modifications were associated with massive cellular depletion in frontal isocortex, hippocampus and entorhinal cortex, but relatively spared striatopallidal structures. We concluded that Al primarily induces the structural alteration and functional isolation of the hippocampus, correlated with behavioral deficits on hippocampal-dependent tasks
